A classic rig, rebuilt for blue water

Dorade

Kevin led sail planning and design for Dorade, while serving the campaign as tactician and sailing master.

The assignment was unusually exacting: preserve the identity of Olin Stephens’ 1929 yawl while giving her the range to race across oceans and the precision to win modern classic regattas. Kevin’s work connected sail selection, rating optimization, boat development and how the crew would actually use the inventory.

Dorade’s results belong to the full campaign team. This showcase focuses on Kevin’s sail-planning, development and sailing contribution.

A sail plan for a foiling 72-footer has to work as part of one system: aerodynamic load, foil balance, flight control, a small crew and a speed range that changes apparent wind quickly. Kevin translated those demands into the boat’s working sail program.

An earlier chapter

Extreme H₂O

Before the Cat 72 came Pat Benz’s bright-green Gunboat 66—and a first-to-finish multihull result in the 2015 Transpac.

Kevin raced the Los Angeles-to-Honolulu course aboard the original Extreme H₂O. The boat took the Rudy Choy Trophy for first multihull elapsed time and finished second in ORCA on corrected time.

Sail inventory & optimization

Westerly

A classic Santa Cruz 52 made competitive for a new chapter.

Within a wider optimization effort that included keel and transom-scoop work, Kevin designed and built Westerly’s complete sail inventory at North Sails Channel Islands. The program used the 2023 Newport to Cabo race as a benchmark on the way to Transpac.
